What we do
Throughout the year, the Friends participate in a variety of community events. These include Festival by the Lake, Wakefield Sidewalk Sale, Farmers' Market, Blossoms at the Beebe, 4th of July Parade and the Holiday Stroll. The Friends also present several events in addition to the annual Book Sale. These may include Literary Teas, the Fall Book Give-Away, the Quilt Raffle and Book Swaps.

Friends Activities Throughout the Year

Below is a sampling of past events: stories and photos of book giveaways, Blossoms at the Beebe, the Annual Literary Tea, a Volunteer Open House, and the Quilt Raffle. Our premier events, the Book Sale and 4th of July Parade (which returned in 2015), have their own pages for stories and photos.

reported by Nancy Tolleson

It was a stunning day by the Lake. The music was lovely and popovers as good as I remember. We couldn't have asked for better weather. I was wonderfully surprised to see more people than I was expecting for both set-up and clean-up. Carol Friesen came by at both ends to help and a wonderful man with his great dog stayed at the end to help pack up. He raved about the Library and Blossoms and said he bid on a lot of stuff at Blossoms.

Special kudos to Patricia who helped to set up and then brought her pick-up truck at the end which was a god send. The Farmers Market provided a canopy which was a huge help too. Thank you to Susan, Sarah and Katherine for Tweeting, Instagramming, etc.

We saw many familiar and new faces. The furthest was a man from Holland who was teaching a course in the area and decided to see what else there was too see. We got lots of nice comments about the Library. One little girl was proud she got her library card and a bubble party yesterday. One person with little twins raved about the museum passes and another person said they went to every jazz performance.

Kids books went well with one woman taking a bag full to give to kids at her medical office, As usual, I think 1/2 of what we displayed came back but we will sort that out later. We promoted the pop-up Library next week and our next big sale on the Library steps on the 26th. We gave out brochures on Overdrive and the 3-5 story times.

It was fun hanging out with everyone. Thank you all so much for all your help and making this such an easy, fun event.

Friends' Fall 2014 Book Give-Aways

Sept. 6th was certainly the hottest Farmers Market we've attended but the weather held and we had a great day. One of the Wakefield Farmer's Market's leaders noted that the crowds were very good that day, and she thought it was in part to our presence. Honey sales were very brisk and we sold a book bag, a membership and enlisted a new volunteer. I suspect over half the books offered were taken and we told everyone to come back to the Library steps for the last Give-Away on Sept. 27th. We were fortunate to have beautiful, clear weather on that day as well.

Thank you to everyone who cheerfully hauled, set up, tore-down and kept the books moving. It was fun meeting new volunteers Pam, Patricia and Janine, and it make my job so easy knowing there's a great team of helpers ready to pitch in at our events.

Library Appreciation Week: April 13-19, 2014

In honor of National Library Appreciation Week, the Friends of Beebe Library thank our Beebe Librarians with flowers and a luncheon. This year, the luncheon was held on Wednesday, April 16th, from 11:30 to 2 so the staff could share a delightful spread around their scheduled lunchtimes. Ample food was available for others who came in later in the day. The beehive cake, baked by Jody Sherman, has become an annual tradition.

In addition to the luncheon, the Friends provided flowers for the reference desk, circulation desk and children’s room for the week beginning April 14th. We hope all enjoyed the flowers when at the Library that week.
Book Swap Tea: February 15, 2014
A snowstorm did not deter book lovers from enjoying an afternoon at the Library, swapping books and talking about books over tea and treats. Reference Librarian Jeff Klapes provided a very informative talk about the special ways our Library can help readers select books to read. This spring, the Library will be launching, an on-line, personalized book recommendation service based on a readers profiles.
